Vol. 74 No. 2

Written Answers. - Flax Statistics.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in respect of the years 1936, 1937 and 1938 respectively (a) the area in each county and the total area under flax; (b) the average yield per acre, and (c) the average price realised per stone for the fibre.

The area under flax in each county is published for the years 1936 and 1937 in table 51, pages 44 to 49 of the Statistical Abstract, 1938, and the average yield per acre for the same years in table 49, page 43, of the same publication. The area in each county in 1938 is published in a table on page 241 of the December, 1938, issue of the Irish Trade Journal and Statistical Bulletin. The average yield of the 1938 crop was 26.6 stones per statute acre. The average price per stone computed from returns received for certain quantities of flax marketed in each of the years 1936, 1937 and 1938 was 8/6, 9/5 and 9/2 respectively.
