Vol. 74 No. 2

Written Answers. - Accident Statistics.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in respect of the years 1936, 1937 and 1938 the number of fatal and the number of non-fatal accidents on (a) railways and (b) public roads; the number of inquiries concerning accidents in each category conducted by his Department in each of the years mentioned; the number of (a) prosecutions instituted and (b) convictions obtained involving the drivers of (a) railway and (b) road vehicles in each of these years.

Particulars of fatal and non-fatal accidents on railways in the years 1936 and 1937 are given in the published "Returns of Railway Companies" for those years—copies of which are available in the Library. The returns for 1938 are not yet complete. Two formal inquiries were held in the years referred to, one in connection with a fatal accident in 1936 and one in connection with a non-fatal accident in 1938. I have no information regarding the number of prosecutions instituted or convictions obtained involving drivers of railway vehicles. Information regarding accidents on public roads involving drivers of road vehicles is not available in my Department.
