Vol. 75 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Unemployment Relief Fund.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he has received a resolution from the Cobh Urban District Council asking that moneys be made available to local authorities out of the Unemployment Relief Fund in a greater ratio than 40 per cent. for public utility work, as councils are finding it increasingly difficult to find schemes for the allocation of such grants to roads and footpaths; and what steps, if any, he has taken to meet the wishes of the council in this matter.

The reply to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. I am not aware that it is difficult to find roads and footpaths schemes for the provision of employment in the vicinity of Cobh. In the current year grants are being allocated to Cork County Council for the purpose of schemes on main roads adjacent to Cobh, and the labour for these schemes will be recruited from unemployment assistance recipients in the Cobh urban area.
