Vol. 76 No. 2

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Migrants in Meath.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state why dairies, fowl-houses and piggeries were not built for migrants from Kerry now residing at the Hatchet, Batterstown, County Meath; whether he is aware that the persons concerned are unable to get sale for their milk because they have not got proper dairies; whether he will state whether these men were promised a payment of £10 when their tillage plots were fenced; whether this money has been paid, and if not, the reason why it has been withheld.

The five migrants from County Kerry to the Leonard Estate near Batterstown, County Meath, were migrated under the group migration scheme which did not include the provision of dairies, fowl-houses or piggeries. It is not the practice of the Land Commission to provide such buildings. The holdings in question, when shown to and accepted by the migrants, were each equipped with a dwellinghouse and one outoffice. No promise was made to the migrants that the Land Commission would facilitate them in the production or disposal of milk supplies. A free grant of £20 was sanctioned for each migrant for internal fencing. £10 of this amount was paid to the migrants in advance, but the balance will not be paid until the Land Commission are satisfied that the fencing for which the grant was sanctioned has been completed.
