Vol. 76 No. 13

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income-tax and Surtax.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the years from and including the year ended the 31st March, 1932, to the latest year for which information is available, the total amount of income-tax and surtax received from persons whose range of income was (a) £1,500-£2,000 per annum; (b) £2,001-£3,000 per annum; (c) £3,001-£4,000 per annum; (d) £4,001-£5,000 per annum; (e) £5,001-£6,000 per annum; (f) £6,001-£8,000 per annum; (g) £8,001-£10,000 per annum; (h) £10,001-£20,000 per annum; (j) over £20,000 per annum; and the total amount received from all such categories.

I regret I am unable to give the information for which the Deputy asks. There are no statistics available giving such information, which is not required for revenue purposes. To obtain it would involve the classification of about 15,000 cases, i.e., about 2,500 a year for each of six years, and the obtaining of detailed particulars from every inspector's district throughout the country.

Will the Minister say if any attempt has at any time been made to estimate the proportion of the amount paid in income-tax by persons whose incomes are less than £1,000?

The Deputy will have to put down another question.
