Vol. 76 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Railway Workshops at Wexford.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the decision of the Great Southern Railways Company to transfer their workshops from Wexford town to Rosslare Harbour; that this removal would seriously interfere with the livelihood of many railway workers resident in the town of Wexford and reduce the revenue of the Wexford Urban Council; and, if so, whether, in view of these considerations, he will ask the company to reconsider their decision.

I have no power to intervene in the management of the Great Southern Railways Company. I am not aware that the company have taken a decision of the nature referred to in the question, but doubtless every method of effecting economies is under consideration.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, I hope he will use his influence to try to get the company to reconsider their decision, so that those unfortunate people living in the town of Wexford will be able to remain where they were reared, and where their children have proper facilities for attending school. I hope he will consider the loss it would be to have those 40 families leaving the town of Wexford. I think the Minister would be doing very good work if he could get the company to reconsider their decision.
