Vol. 76 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Surtax and Corporation Profits Tax.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state No. 16.

(a) the number of surtax payers in each of the years 1934-5, 1935-6, 1936-7, 1937-8 and 1938-9, respectively; (b) the number of companies charged with Corporation Profits Tax in each of the above years.

So far as information, under the first part of the question, for the years 1934-5 to 1937-8 is concerned I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave to Deputy Mulcahy on the 14th June, 1939 (Official Report. Cols. 837-8). Assessments to surtax are still being made for the year 1938-9 and tax will be payable on the 1st January, 1940. It is estimated that the number of surtax payers in respect of the year 1938-9 will exceed 2,500. As regards the second part of the question, the number of companies charged with Corporation Profits Tax during each of those years is as follows:—1934-5, 207; 1935-6, 226; 1936-7, 270; 1937-8, 338; 1938-9, 332.
