asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of each Department of State other than the Department of Finance, the total moneys under their control and invested at (a) 31st March, 1938, and (b) 31st March, 1939; the sum in each case invested in foreign securities and the nature of such securities, the nominal value of the securities and their market value at (a) 31st March, 1938, and (b) 31st March, 1939, or at the last previous date on which there were dealings in the securities concerned.

Information available in my Department is not sufficiently comprehensive to enable a full reply to be given to the Deputy's question. In any event it would not be possible in a number of cases to state "the total moneys under the control of Departments and invested" as in the case of, e.g., the courts, it is not possible to ascertain the cost price of the securities coming into their control other than by purchase.
I am circulating with the Official Report a statement showing for each Department other than the Department of Finance the nominal value, on each of the dates mentioned in the question, of funds under their control invested in Irish Government and British Government securities and the aggregate market value as on the two dates of the British Government securities held.
