Vol. 78 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Oil Cakes and Meals.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state whether in view of the fact that the Emergency Powers (Control of Prices) (No. 1) Order, 1939, has ceased to apply to oil cakes and meals, he will state what steps, if any, have been taken to control (a) the wholesale and (b) the retail price of oil cakes and meals, and whether any increases have taken place in (a) the wholesale or (b) the retail prices of oil cakes and meals since the 21st November, 1939.

Oil cakes and meals were withdrawn by order from the operation of the Emergency Powers (Control of Prices) (No. 1) Order, 1939, on representations, made by the leading importers of linseed cake and cottonseed meal, as to the increased landed costs of imported linseed cake and cottonseed meal. It was agreed with the importers that the price of linseed meals and nuts obtained from linseed cake and the price of cottonseed meal should be increased to specified figures to compensate them for the increased costs of imported materials. The price of these cakes and meals is continually under review. Representations have been made by the Irish Oil and Cake Mills that prices of cakes and meals produced in Drogheda should be increased, and the question is under consideration. No complaints have been received as to excessive retail prices for these commodities.

Because people are no longer able to buy them. They have given up buying them.
