Vol. 84 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Family Allowances.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the interdepartmental committee appointed to inquire into family allowances has yet reported, and, if not, whether they have yet assembled statistics of the numbers of persons who would benefit under such a scheme and its probable cost.

The interdepartmental committee has not yet reported. It is obtaining statistical information to enable it to estimate the number of beneficiaries under, and the probable cost of alternative schemes prior to reaching conclusions.

When will these statistics and the information regarding probable cost be accumulated—when will they be assembled?

There was some delay arising out of the vacation period last month. I cannot give a definite date, but I am asking the Department to press for the necessary information.

Will the Minister consider furnishing those statistics relating to numbers and probable cost to interested parties who might apply to him before the report is issued?

Certainly, as far as they are available.
