Vol. 84 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Position of Fuel Supply.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state the present position of the fuel supply with particular reference to the quantities of household coal and steam coal in stock and on order, and the anticipated deliveries of both classes of coal during the next six months; and the arrangements which have been made to ensure an adequate supply of fuel at reasonable prices to town dwellers, and for the storage of adequate stocks to meet the demands of people obliged to obtain supplies of fuel in small lots.

The total stocks of coal held by importers and merchants are considered to be sufficient to last for over a month on the basis of normal consumption, but it will be borne in mind that practically all this coal is of very inferior quality. It is not possible to state the quantities of coal on order, but this point is irrelevant, as our supplies are dependent on the exports permitted from week to week by the United Kingdom authorities. It is quite impossible to forecast with any degree of confidence what deliveries of imported coal may be anticipated over the next six months. As the Deputy is aware, a rationing scheme is in operation with a view to the equitable distribution of whatever supplies of coal and turf are available from time to time. It is not possible to distinguish between stocks of household and steam coal. For a considerable time past all the coal imported, other than gas coal, is of low volatility. The supplies of coal in urban areas will be supplemented by turf and firewood, and stocks are being accumulated in the principal towns of the non-turf areas. Unless, however, the situation should change considerably for the better, it is unlikely that the supply of all classes of fuel will be adequate to prevent difficulties of an exceptional character being experienced during the coming winter. The prices of all kinds of fuel are constantly under review in my Department.

Will the Minister say what percentage of our normal requirements we are now receiving from Great Britain—making the calculation on the last month or two or three months?

I would require notice of that question.
