Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Government Engineering Staff.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state (a) the number of inspectors on the engineering advisory staff of his Department, (b) the qualifications for the position possessed by each such inspector, (c) the salaries, emoluments and allowances payable in each case, (d) the districts for which the respective officers are responsible, and the duties attaching to the position; further, whether he will state the procedure adopted in the Department for making promotions amongst the engineering staff.

The information is as follows:—

(a) 12.

(b) A University Degree in Engineering, or its equivalent, with practical experience of the carrying out of engineering work.

(c)1 at £800—£25—£1,000 plus bonus.

1,,£50 a month, inclusive.

(d) No special districts are assigned. Engineering inspectors act under the direction of the chief engineering adviser. Their duties are to examine the technical aspects of engineering proposals submitted by local bodies and report upon the execution of approved works.

The claims of all eligible officers to promotion are considered on merits when vacancies exist.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state in respect of the engineering advisory staff of his Department (a) the number of persons appointed to the staff since 1930, (b) the previous experience and qualifications of the persons appointed, (c) the method of making such appointments and the authority by which they were made.

The information is as follows:—

(a) 10.

(b) They possessed a University Degree in Engineering. Prior to appointment they had practical experience for several years of important engineering works.

(c) Appointments are made through the Civil Service Commission. In one case of urgency a temporary post was filled directly by the Department.
