asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state in respect of each local authority the area (a) acquired for, and (b) utilised as allotments in each of the years 1939, 1940 and 1941, and the number of allotment holders in each case; further, whether he will state the measures which are being adopted to increase the acreage available for allotments in 1942 and the facilities which will be provided to enable allotment holders to obtain seeds, fertilisers and protective preparations for their allotments.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acreage for Allotments.
The information in the particular form asked for is not readily available in the Department and the time that would be required to compile it in that form would not be justified. A statement which will appear in the Official Report shows the number of allotments actually provided in each municipal area under the Acquisition of Land (Allotments) Acts, 1926 and 1934 for each of the years 1939, 1940, and 1941. With the exception of Dublin County Borough where the allotments are usually one-tenth of an acre in extent the allotments are in most other cases one-eighth of an acre. The number of allotments provided by urban authorities was 4,550 in 1939, 9,105 in 1940, and 23,260 (approximately) in 1941.
Municipal authorities were addressed on the 8th instant on the need for increasing the number of allotments in the year 1942. Free seeds, manures, spraying materials and implements will be made available through the Department of Agriculture for unemployed persons.
The demand for allotments is mainly in urban areas. Rural authorities were, however, invited on the 31st January last to co-operate in the campaign for increased food production and urged to provide land for allotments where necessary. As a result boards of health with the co-operation of parish councils provided 2,767 allotments in 20 out of the 26 counties. Particulars as to the number and extent of the allotments so provided are not at present available.
