Vol. 85 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Defence Force.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the dissatistion which prevails among members of the Local Defence Force because of the financial basis of the force and in different enforcement of discipline, and if he will take steps to improve their position in these respects and so eliminate the necessity for the constant promotion of entertainment in their support.

I am not aware of any dissatisfaction in the Local Defence Force arising from the financial basis of the Force. The public funds provided have, up to now, proved adequate for the purposes for which they are authorised to be used. While the holding of various entertainments as a means of raising additional funds has been encouraged, the Deputy will appreciate that in most cases the social value of the event outweighs the monetary reward. The discipline of the Local Defence Force, generally, is good. The Deputy will, I feel sure, understand that it is much more difficult to secure the same high standard of discipline in a voluntary body as is maintained in the regular service. I am satisfied that the leaders of the Force will aim at a high standard, in which object they will receive every support from the Army authorities.
