Vol. 85 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wool Supplies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) the quantity and value of Irish grown wool exported in each of the last five years; and (b) the total quantity of Irish grown wool now in store in this country.

The exports of home-grown wool were 126,950 centals, f.o.b., value £785,546 in the year 1937; 121,651 centals, f.o.b., value £471,138 in the year 1938, and 114,382 centals, f.o.b., value £457,245 in the eight months January-August, 1939.

The publication of detailed particulars of external trade has been suspended after August, 1939, as explained in my reply to Deputy Pattison, to which I would also refer the Deputy in reference to the second part of his question.

Is the Minister satisfied that it is in the public interest that we should be exporting so much wool while hundreds of families are without blankets?

The Deputy may be assured that no wool that could be utilised here is being exported.
