Vol. 85 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arigna Coal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) the quantity of coal mined at Arigna in each of the last 12 months, (b) the average number of men employed at the Arigna mines during each of the last 12 months, and (c) the average price realised ex-colliery for the coal sold from Arigna in each of the last 12 months.

The separate monthly figures asked for by the Deputy are not available in my Department. From an investigation made in December, 1941, it is estimated that at that time the output in the Arigna area was at the rate of 65,000 tons per annum. At the time of the investigation the number of men employed was approximately 300 men. The average price ex-colliery was estimated to be in the neighbourhood of 23/- per ton. For the year 1940 the output from Arigna was approximately 44,000 tons, valued at £43,000.
