Vol. 86 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Potatoes.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that considerable quantities of potatoes were exported from this country during the past three months; and, if so, whether, in view of the acute shortage of cereals and of flour particularly, he will take steps to prevent the further export of potatoes under any pretext, so long as the emergency continues and our supply of food is imperilled.

No table potatoes have been exported from this country since last summer. Seed potatoes, however, of varieties not generally in favour here have been exported. These seed potatoes were grown specially for the export market and were surplus to home requirements. It is not proposed to permit the export of any potatoes unless there is a surplus.
