Vol. 88 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Tubbercurry River.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that a demand exists amongst the farmers in South Sligo, in the neighbourhood of Tubbercurry, for the drainage of Tubbercurry river and the lands adjacent to it; that a considerable area of land along the banks of the river is for long periods under water to the depth of six feet when the river overflows its banks; that the condition of the river prevents neighbouring farmers from draining or fencing their lands; that, owing to flooding at Allyara cemetery road and the unsuitability of the bridge there, the road leading to the cemetery is often under water up to the height of the cemetery wall; and whether, in these circumstances, he will take steps to carry out the drainage scheme proposed by the landholders of the locality concerned.

The river to which the Deputy refers was included in proposals for the drainage of the River Moy and its tributaries, but these proposals were deferred on the setting up of the Drainage Commission. As has been indicated in the Dáil on several occasions recently, the carrying out of future drainage schemes must await the enactment of legislation arising out of the report of the Drainage Commission.
