Vol. 89 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Unemployment Assistance Payment.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why unemployment assistance payable to Thomas Bolger, Kilcullen, Templeshambo, Ferns, County Wexford, has been reduced from 14/- to 9/- per week.

Mr. Bolger formerly held a qualification certificate showing "nil" means. On the facts disclosed by a re-investigation of his circumstances, an unemployment assistance officer on the 28th January last determined his weekly rate of means to be 6/-. This caused the reduction mentioned in the rate of assistance payable to him. Mr. Bolger has appealed against the determination of the unemployment assistance officer and his case is being further investigated. He will be notified of the result of his appeal as soon as possible.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say how the amount of 6/- was assessed and why it is that when people like Mr. Bolger inquire at the labour exchange as to why any reduction is made, they will not be told?

It would appear that Mr. Bolger takes on some small contracts. The estimate of his yearly means amounts to about £13 10s. He has, as stated, appealed against that estimate and he will be notified of the result in due course.

What is the total number of dependents involved in this case?

Sin ceist eile.
