Vol. 89 No. 12

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Roscommon Farm.

asked the Minister for Lands whether any steps were taken subsequent to October 28th, 1942, to acquire and subdivide the farm of Mr. Joseph R. Poynton, Lloyd Estate, Record No. S. 1987 (Roscommon), whether he is aware that in November cattle were driven off this farm with the result that damages were claimed by and awarded to Mr. Poynton, and that the amount thereof will be levied by direction of the Circuit Court judge off the ratepayers residing in the electoral division in which the farm is situate; whether his attention was directed to the sworn evidence of Mr. Poynton at the trial of the malicious injuries claim to the effect that, as far back as 1921, he offered the land in question to the Land Commission to relieve congestion and that Poynton's counsel asserted no effort was made at any time to acquire these lands; whether in view of the sworn evidence given at the trial he will order an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the non-acquisition of this farm.

Since the date of the Deputy's previous question on this matter, the Land Commission have had the case under further consideration and have decided to institute proceedings for resumption of the holding as soon as possible. As regards the previous history of the case, I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to his question of 28th October, 1942, recapitulating the negotiations of the Land Commission with the tenant for the resumption of this holding.
