Vol. 89 No. 12

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speculation in Land.

asked the Minister for Lands if it is the intention of the Land Commission to continue land division after the war; and, if so, if he is aware that many large estates in the Midlands are being sold to outsiders who formerly had no interest in land, while in the vicinity of these large estates, there are many congested areas and uneconomic holders; and whether, in the circumstances, the Minister will have a stop put to this speculation in land by non-nationals and others.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, the Land Commission have no power or intention to prevent private sales of lands by the owners. Such sales do not prevent the possible exercise in future of the powers for acquiring lands for division accorded to the Land Commission under the Land Acts. At present the exercise of these powers is necessarily limited by the existing emergency conditions.
