Vol. 89 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Butter Supplies.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that there has been a very serious shortage of butter in Wexford for some weeks past, due to the inability of traders to procure their quotas from the creameries; and whether he will take immediate steps to have an adequate supply of butter made available.

I am not aware that traders in Wexford are unable to procure their quotas of butter from the creameries. Out of the available stocks in the country, Wexford has been getting a fair supply of creamery butter based on the purchases of each individual trader in the same period last year. The county manager is in constant and direct communication with my Department on the matter, and at his request the local dairy produce inspector was instructed by me to investigate the position in Wexford and Enniscorthy early in February. As a result of this inspector's report, the supply of creamery butter to these towns was increased generally, and, where the circumstances so warranted, certain individual cases were specially adjusted.

The question of supplies for the current month is under investigation at the moment by the local inspector, and when his report is received a decision will be arrived at on the question of making additional supplies available, having regard to the general position of stocks and the quantities of farm butter likely to come on the market.

If the traders in County Wexford certify that they are not receiving anything like the amount of butter they should receive, will the Minister deny it?

I have not been officially informed of that by the traders.
