Vol. 89 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tobacco and Cigarette Prices.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that the prices of certain brands of tobaccos and cigarettes were recently increased and, if so, if he will state why.

I am aware that the prices of certain brands of tobaccos were recently increased, but there has been no increase in the prices of cigarettes manufactured in this country, which are controlled by a maximum price order. I found it necessary to permit price advances by certain of the smaller manufacturers for pipe tobaccos, having regard to the increased cost to manufacturers of importing tobacco leaf into this country. These price advances have the effect of increasing retail selling prices by 1d. per ounce.
