Vol. 89 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of Great Southern Railways Lock-keepers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why lock-keepers on the Royal Canal, employed by the Great Southern Railways, are prevented by Emergency Powers Order from receiving any increase in wages or bonus to meet the increased cost of living.

By Emergency Powers (No. 260) Order, 1943, increases in remuneration may not be granted save in accordance with the provisions of that Order. By way of exemption from the general prohibition, different limits of remuneration are specified for different areas, up to which wages might be increased without infringement of the Order. The limit in the case of county boroughs is £3 per week.

Where an increase of remuneration would bring the remuneration above the limits appropriate to the particular area of employment, application would require to be made for a bonus Order. No application for a bonus Order applicable to lock-keepers on the Royal Canal, employed by the Great Southern Railways, has been made to my Department.

Is the Minister aware that the Great Southern Railways Company have stated that lock-keepers are excluded under the Order?

I have just now informed the Deputy that that is not so.

Mr. Byrne

Who is right?

I am—as always.
