Vol. 90 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Heating of Dublin Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that many large schools in Dublin have been without any heating facilities for some months, and that, in consequence of the unheated condition of the schools, a number of children have been unable to attend school regularly; and, if so, whether he will state what steps it is proposed taking to remedy this condition of affairs for the future.

I am not aware that many large schools in Dublin have been without any heating facilities for some months, nor that a number of children have not been able to attend school regularly owing to the unheated condition of the schools.

The arrangements for the heating of the schools rest with the managers, but I have made inquiry and find that three school buildings were without any heating facilities for some months, as the managers had not a sufficient supply of fuel of the type needed to operate the heating system.

My Department has been in communication with the Department of Supplies and will continue in communication with that Department with a view to securing that adequate supplies of fuel will, as far as possible, during the emergency period, be made available to managers for the heating of national schools.

Can the Minister state how soon he is likely to be able to provide the fuel necessary for the heating facilities of these schools?
