Vol. 92 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Untenanted Land in Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands what is the total area of untenanted land held by the Irish Land Commission in County Mayo which was acquired for the purpose of subdivision but not yet divided.

As the area in the hands of the Land Commission may vary from day to day according as land division proceeds, it is not practicable to give precise figures of lands in hands at the moment, but roughly there are in County Mayo some 12,000 acres of untenanted land acquired under the Land Acts, 1923-39 and not yet divided. More than half of this would consist of residues of turbary and mountain land difficult to dispose of.

In addition to the untenanted land acquired under the Land Acts, 1923-39 a considerable residue of turbary and mountain acquired many years ago in County Mayo by the former Congested Districts Board still remains for final disposal, but any portion of it suitable for letting is let on temporary grazing agreements, which may be later converted into purchase agreements if circumstances make such a course desirable. The residue is of little value and may be practically disregarded in a consideration of lands in hands for division.
