Vol. 93 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Working Hours of Male Night Telephonists.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the number of hours per week worked by male night telephonists and the wages paid per hour, in Dublin; and whether he proposes to increase the wages or grant a bonus to these workers.

Full-time male night telephonists are employed for 45 hours weekly; the hours of the part-time staff vary according to requirements.

Full-time officers are employed at a weekly rate, the inclusive wage of the present employees ranging from £3 6s. 2d. to £3 13s. 2d. for established officers and from £2 8s. 3d. to £2 10s. 3d. for temporary officers. An emergency bonus of 10/- a week (married) and 8/- a week (unmarried) is paid in addition. The attendance of temporary part-time male night telephonists varies from 18 to 36 hours a week and the rate of pay from 11d. to 1/2¼d. per hour. An emergency bonus of from 5/7 to 6/- a week is paid in addition.

A claim for increased pay and other improvements in conditions has just been received on behalf of the grades referred to and will be examined.

Mr. A. Byrne

Does the Minister think 11d. per hour sufficient for any young man employed in his Department? Does he propose to increase the wages of these youth from 11d. per hour to a reasonable figure?

I said that we have been asked to look into the matter again. It is under examination at present and I do not propose to prejudice the case.

Mr. A. Byrne

So long as it is under consideration, I am satisfied.
