Vol. 94 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Position of Chief Medical Adviser.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether, in view of the difficulty encountered in filling the vacant position of chief medical adviser to his Department, consideration has been given to the advisability of fixing a higher salary scale for such position in order to secure the service of a person whose qualifications are of the nature required for such an important position in the public health system of the country.

The post of chief medical adviser in my Department has been filled by the appointment of Dr. James A. Deeny of Lurgan, County Armagh. Dr. Deeny graduated with honours at Queen's University, Belfast, in 1928, obtaining first place in medicine. He obtained his B.Sc. in 1929, the Diploma in Public Health in 1930, the Degree of M.D. in 1931, of M.Sc. in 1939, and in 1942 his Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, Ireland. He is a member of the Council of the Northern Ireland Branch of the British Medical Association, and he has been nominated by the Branch Council as the Northern Ireland representative on the Central Panel Committee of the association in London.

He has made a special study of nutrition and social medicine and has carried out research work on vitamins for the Medical Research Council of Ireland. He has also carried out a survey into infant mortality, an investigation into the incidence of tuberculosis, and a survey into social conditions in the linen industry in Northern Ireland, and he is the author of many publications on medical subjects.
