Vol. 94 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kildare Turf Camps.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state whether it has been decided to suspend the work of erecting additional turf camps in County Kildare; and, if so, for what reason the work has been suspended.

In view of the critical fuel position it was decided in June to erect further turf camps in County Kildare and at Inny Junction in County Westmeath even though the amount of additional turf which could be expected from these camps next year would be comparatively small, and the cost would be higher than that of turf produced by the existing turf camps. It has been decided to suspend work on the erection of these additional camps as a result of the good production achieved this year both by the Turf Development Board and the county surveyors.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, might I ask him whether, as one of these schemes has been suspended in my constituency, he has any hope that work will be resumed there at an early date?

I do not think so.
