Vol. 95 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repairs to Wexford Cottages.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that a large number of labourers' cottages in the County Wexford are still in very bad repair, their conditions being in some cases a danger to the health of the occupiers; that although they have been reported on on several occasions, no action has been taken; and whether he will now arrange to have these cottages inspected and repaired without further delay.

This matter has been investigated in connection with previous questions by the Deputy in regard to the bad state of repair of labourers' cottages in Wexford county. As recently as last month my Department obtained a further report from the local authority on the actual position, and the evidence obtained indicates that there are no adequate grounds for the statement that a large number of cottages are in very bad repair, and that their condition is a danger to the health of the occupiers. There is a scheme at present in force for the carrying out of repairs where necessary.

What in the name of God does the Minister mean? Does he mean to say I am telling lies? I know the cottages are in a very bad state and if the Minister sends down an inspector he will find that to be the case. They are not fit for human beings to live in. Many of the houses are damp and some people have very little cover, while others have poor fires. I am sure if the Minister saw the houses he would say that something should be done with them. It is a disgrace in a Christian country. The conditions could not be much worse.

I am not suggesting that the Deputy is telling lies, but I do suggest that his judgment may be at fault, he being a layman, as to the state of the cottages. If the Deputy has any particular case in mind, and if he reports it to me, I shall have it examined.

All right. I might mention that I have already reported several cases.
