Vol. 95 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soil Survey.

Mr. Corish (for Mr. Norton)

asked the Minister for Agriculture if it is now proposed to arrange for a complete soil survey of the country so as to ascertain its inherent fertility and the suitability or otherwise of various areas for the production of particular crops; whether he is aware of the urgency of this matter having regard to the need for increased tillage, and if he will state when such survey will be undertaken.

For the reasons given in my reply to the question regarding soils addressed to me by Deputy Hughes on the 16th November, 1943, I cannot admit the assumptions implied in parts 1 and 2 of the Deputy's question. As to part 3, I do not propose to arrange for such a survey as is suggested. I am arranging, however, to provide facilities for soil analysis for the use of any farmer who, after consultation with the agricultural instructor, may desire to avail of them.
