Vol. 95 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Surplus Oats.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he can find a market for the big surplus of this year's oats crop that farmers cannot sell and have no facilities for storing.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply on the 28th September to the question on this subject which was addressed to me by Deputy O'Donnell. I have nothing to add to that reply.

Is that the only cure the Minister has for the surplus oats?

That is the answer to the Deputy's question.

The farmers have no storage and no money, and where are they to sell their oats?

Export them. Is it not true that two years ago the Minister had an acute shortage of oats? He took the control off oats and now we have an exportable surplus. If he will do the same with barley, we will have the same results.

Is it true that control is off oats?

Not entirely.

It is, and I made him do it.

Why did the Deputy not make me do other things?

I am doing my best.

Mr. Corish

We cannot hear what is going on.

That is not surprising.
