Vol. 95 No. 8

Ceisteanna. — Questions. Oral Answers. - Home Manufactured and Imported Cigarettes.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that the difference between home manufactured cigarettes (20 for 1/5) and American cigarettes (20 for 2/4) is 64.7 per cent.; and whether, with a view to giving more home employment and to enable the public to get a better type of cigarette at 11d. for 20 cheaper, he will consider the question of allocating the shipping space now given to American manufactured cigarettes to the importation of more raw leaf.

Space is being provided on Irish ships for all consignments of leaf tobacco released by the United States authorities for manufacturers here. As the supplies being made available fall short of requirements, space has also been granted to permit of the importation of manufactured cigarettes from North America.

Has the Minister any control over the price?

Whatever price we can get them at.
