Vol. 95 No. 8

Ceisteanna. — Questions. Oral Answers. - G. S. R.—Labour and Waggon Shortage.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the chaotic conditions existing at the Kingsbridge and North Wall depôts of the Great Southern Railway owing to the shortage of labour and waggons, which is resulting in serious delay and consequent loss to traders and others; and if he will take steps to see that the labour shortage is remedied immediately, and also if he will ask the Great Southern Railway that a report be given to him of the time taken in moving loaded and empty waggons to and from their destinations.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the negative and the second part does not therefore arise.

Does the Minister contend that there is no suggestion of waggons?

I am suggesting that there are no chaotic conditions due to shortage of labour or waggons at the North Wall.

Is there an undesirable state of affairs there due to shortage of waggons and shortage of labour?

No; there is no difficulty due to any shortage of labour. There is a problem all over the country due to shortage of waggons, but there are no chaotic conditions at the North Wall.

I should like to suggest to the Minister that undoubtedly there is a shortage of waggons which, I suppose, is due to the inherent difficulty of the waggon working only about two hours a week. I suggest to the Minister that by putting on more labour to discharge the waggons he can improve the situation. Will the Minister examine the matter?

I will have it examined.
