Vol. 95 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fish Price Control.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that the controlled price of fish has resulted in a shortage of all classes of fish and has imposed serious hardships on fishermen; and, if so, if he is prepared to remove price control on fish.

I am satisfied that the control of fish prices has not been in any way responsible for causing a shortage of fish and I have no evidence that it has imposed hardships on fishermen. I have, therefore, no intention of removing this control. On the contrary, I regard it as most necessary to ensure that a virtually essential commodity will not for considerable periods of the year be available only to those who can afford to pay fantastic prices for it.
