Vol. 96 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Savings Certificates.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state, as at the date of 31/12/1944 (a) the total amount of the principal moneys borrowed on the security of the first issue of Savings Certificates; (b) the total amount of repayments of such principal moneys (not including interest payments); and (c) the total amount paid in interest on the first issue of Savings Certificates; and further, if he will state, as at the same date, the total amounts under the same three separate heads in respect of the second issue of Savings Certificates.

As the answer contains detailed statistics it will be published in the Official Reports.

Following is the answer:

The information asked for by the Deputy is:—

(a) First Issue

£8,016,847

4

6

Second Issue

£2,541,375

4

0

(b) First Issue

£5,405,570

Second Issue

For the sake of economy in clerical work, the amounts paid in interest on repayment of certificates are recorded in bulk and not separately for the first, second and third issues. The total paid in interest on repayment of certificates of all three issues as at 31/12/1944 was roughly £2,646,116 8s. 3d. It is estimated that, of this amount, roughly £2,200,000 was appropriate to the first issue, and roughly £250,000 to the second issue.
