Vol. 96 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Distribution of Offaly Land.

asked the Minister for Lands if he has received complaints from the people of Ferbane parish who were unsuccessful in securing land on the Waller estate, Moystown, Belmont, County Offaly, while land was given to "outsiders"; and, if so, if he will state what he proposes to do in the matter so as to meet the local demand for land.

Complaints have been received relative to the distribution of the lands on the Waller estate, but the complaints do not appear to be justified by the facts of the case. Local congests and ex-employees have been provided for in the division scheme together with a few migrants who might be described as local. The allottees whom the Deputy describes as "outsiders" are, I take it, the five tenants from the opposite side of the River Shannon whose holdings (less than a mile away) are uncultivable owing to periodic flooding and who are being transferred to parcels and houses on the Waller estate in order to improve their wretched and insanitary conditions. In the circumstances there seems no reason why the division scheme should be altered.
