Vol. 97 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rent Allowance for Tuberculosis Patients.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state if any arrangements will be made to provide a rent allowance for tuberculosis patients during their period of illness and inability to take advantage of full remunerative employment.

It is within the discretion of local authorities to make provision of the nature referred to in the Deputy's question.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary make a recommendation that that should be done?

Has not the Parliamentary Secretary already declared that it should be done?

It is within the discretion of local authorities.

Has not the Parliamentary Secretary already declared that that should be done?

It is within the discretion of local authorities.

The Parliamentary Secretary must not have heard what I said. Has not the Parliamentary Secretary already declared that this discretion should be given effect to so as to prevent tuberculosis patients from suffering hardship whilst in a sanatorium when they know that their wives and children are threatened with eviction? Will he make a recommendation that the evictions should be stopped?

No; The matter rests with the local authorities.
