Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Afforestation in Wexford.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether he contemplates acquiring any land in County Wexford for the purpose of afforestation; if so, if he will indicate the location of such lands and the area involved, and state whether it is contemplated that preliminary work will be commenced on such lands prior to the next planting season.

Negotiations are proceeding for the purchase of the following areas in County Wexford for afforestation purposes.

Raheen

24½ acres.

Ballynamuddagh

17½ acres.

Coolgreancy

40 acres.

Agreement has been reached for the purchase of the undermentioned areas and the legal formalities are in hands.

Raheenduff

95¾ acres.

Camaross

103¼ acres.

Courthoyle

26½ acres.

Ballenday

36½ acres.

Raheenvarren

7acres.

Ballyboy

56½ acres.

Coolgarron

4½ acres.

Offers totalling 97½ acres are under consideration, but have not yet reached the stage of active negotiations.

Three areas of commonage as under are proposed for compulsory acquisition.

Bantry Commons

3,880acres.

Forth Mountain

279½ acres.

Raheenahone Hill

86acres.

It is impossible to say when the Department will obtain actual possession of any of these areas, so that I can give no assurance, in any instance, as to a date when operations will be commenced.
