Vol. 105 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conveyance of Prisoners.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make arrangements for the conveyance of prisoners by methods other than the public bus services as is the practice at present.

I agree that there are objections to the conveyance of prisoners by public buses, and I can assure the Deputy that this is done only when no other form of transport is available. In the present condition of public transport it is not possible entirely to discontinue the practice, but I hope that in the future it will be possible to make other arrangements.

I was an eye-witness on a public bus when people had to stand while prisoners and young boys going to industrial schools were carried on the bus. Surely to God, there are enough cars available to enable the State to provide a car for their conveyance?

Would the Minister say if suitable transport is available for the conveyance of prisoners in the west to Sligo Jail?

That is a separate question.
