Vol. 106 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Food Supply in Inishbofin and Inishark.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that regular deliveries of flour are not being made in Inishbofin and Inishark; that supplies of potatoes are running short; that the inhabitants of these islands are alarmed by the serious food supply position; and if he will take all possible measures to see that it is speedily improved.

I received a complaint last March that flour supplies in Inishbofin had run short. Investigation showed that supplies of flour despatched from Limerick to Westport had been delayed due to the curtailment of rail services at that time. Delivery of the flour in question was expedited and no complaint has since been received that supplies to the islands are not being delivered regularly.

I have arranged to make an allocation of oatmeal to the islands from a small cargo which was recently imported. I have asked the Minister for Agriculture to examine the possibility of providing additional supplies of potatoes for the islands.
