Vol. 106 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Farmer's Losses.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that considerable losses have been sustained by Mr. James Reidy, Ballycannon House, Meelick, Limerick, by reason of the facts: (a) that the river passing through the Department's lands at Knocklisheen has been diverted into Mr. Reidy's lands as a result of a broken bridge, (b) that the drainage of the Department's lands has been neglected, thus choking up the drains on Mr. Reidy's lands, and (c) that there has been considerable trespass of cattle from the Department's lands as a result of the neglected condition of the fencing thereon; and if he will state what steps he proposes to take to consider the representations already made to him by Mr. Reidy and to prevent damage arising for others through the neglect of the Department.

I am not aware that considerable losses have been sustained by Mr. Reidy by reason of the factors mentioned by the Deputy. The representations made by Mr. Reidy have been investigated and as a result the most urgent requirement, that is, the removal of the broken bridge, has already been put in hands. The question of carrying out the remainder of the work, drainage and fencing, is at present being examined. Every effort will be made to expedite the completion of all the works for which my Department is found to be liable.
