Vol. 107 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Red Cross Society.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state what is the full amount, to date, of public moneys voted for and given to the Irish Red Cross Society; how much, if any, of such voted moneys has been repaid by the society; whether the society has any funds other than the moneys so provided by the State; and if so, how much.

As the reply contains an amount of statistical information I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle and with the Deputy's consent, to have it published in the Official Report.

The full amount of public moneys issued to date to the Irish Red Cross Society from public funds is as follows:—

None of these moneys has been repaid by the society.

In addition to the foregoing, Grants-in-Aid of £100,000 from the 1943-44 Votes for Alleviation of Distress in Europe and India and of £100,000 from the 1944-45 Vote for Alleviation of Distress in Italy were made to the Red Cross Society.

Payments amounting to £43,418 18s. 5d. were made to the society for the alleviation of distress in respect of the purchase and shipment of relief supplies to Europe.

The audited accounts of the Red Cross Society for the half year ended 31st December, 1946, show the receipts of that society to be:—
