Vol. 110 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Means Test.

Mr. Collins

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will indicate the approximate cost of enforcing the means test, and if he can state what is the nett revenue to the State from the savings under this heading.

The information required by the Deputy is not readily available, and it is not possible to give any reliable estimate. The whole question of the operation of the means test is at present under active consideration.

Mr. Collins

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will indicate when the proposed modifications of the means test will come into operation, and what form these modifications will take.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he has taken steps to amend the means test now in force for applicants for old age pensions and if he will state when it is proposed to bring the new means test into effect.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he has yet investigated the possibility of modifying or abolishing the means test for old age pensions; and, if not, when he is likely to be in a position to make a statement on the matter.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will consider the desirability of altering the means test as applied to old age pensions claimants, and if he will consider the representations of old age pensioners for an increase in the amounts now being paid.

I propose, with your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, to take questions Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 together.

The examination of the question of the means test for old age pensions, widows' and orphans' pensions, and unemployment assistance is being actively pursued. While it is not yet possible to say when a comprehensive statement on the subject can be made it is hoped that an announcement will be made at an early date.
