Vol. 110 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Census of Industrial Production.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why in the reports on the Census of Industrial Production for the year 1945 as published in the Irish Trade Journal no particulars are given of (a) salaries and wages; (b) number of persons employed, or (c) average earnings; why the previous practice of publishing these particulars was departed from in the case of the returns of 1945, and whether he is now prepared to have this information published in the next issue of the Irish Trade Journal.

For reasons outside the control of the Department, compilation of the reports of the Census of Industrial Production for 1945 fell into arrears and, to save time, it was decided to concentrate on the preliminary publication of gross output and materials used sections, reserving particulars of personnel, salaries and wages for publication in separate reports on industrial production and wages and earnings, so as to avoid duplication of published matter.

With reference to the last part of the question, publication of the omitted particulars will be resumed in the March, 1948 issue of the Irish Trade Journal and Statistical Bulletin which will contain the particulars for 1945 and 1946 for about 16 industries. It is hoped to complete the publication of the 1946 (with full comparison with 1945) results in the June, 1948, issue.
