As the final incidence of taxation is often extremely difficult to trace, I would prefer not to attempt a classification of taxation into "direct" and "indirect". A rough classification, to which I would refer the Deputy, was adopted for statistical purposes in Table 27 of the White Paper on National Income and Expenditure, 1938-44. Particulars of the revenue derived from the various taxes are given in the annual Finance Accounts.
