Vol. 110 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of County Galway Road.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) whether an application was received in his Department for a reconstruction grant to repair the Cloonagh-Rosmearing village road, Doonbally E.D., Tuam R.D.; and, if so (b) why the work was not proceeded with, and (c) if this work could be carried out through minor employment schemes or otherwise without any contribution from the local inhabitants.

An application has been received, and an offer conveyed to the applicants on the 12th April, 1948, but so far the applicants have not replied.

Normally, this work would not be eligible for a full-cost State grant under minor employment schemes, unless there were a sufficient number of unemployment assistance recipients in the area to form a gang of economic size.

Apart from this, however, it is possible that it may be considered for inclusion in the programme to provide employment for displaced turf workers.

I have been given to understand that the Parliamentary Secretary told these people that if they put up £30 the Board of Works would put up £200. They collected this money and Peter Flaherty took it to the Parliamentary Secretary in Dunmore.

Has the Deputy a supplementary question to ask?

I am asking if that is correct. At a later stage the Parliamentary Secretary promised these people that the work would be done free of any local contribution. I would like to know if there is any hope of that promise being fulfilled.

The Deputy should have asked a question about the alleged promise. There is no reference to that.

What is the supplementary question?

Is what I have stated true?

Ceist fada se é.
