Vol. 110 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the water supply system of Milltown, County Kerry, is hopelessly antiquated and if, in view of the fact that the natural resources in this area would readily permit of the provision of a proper system at a minimum cost, he will arrange to have work commenced on a suitable scheme as soon as possible

Mr. Murphy

The question of initiating a water supply improvement scheme at Milltown is primarily a matter for the local authority. An improvement scheme was considered by the Kerry Board of Health and Public Assistance when that body was in existence and was deferred indefinitely on grounds of expense. In 1936, the county medical officer of health reported against proceeding with the scheme in advance of schemes of prior urgency. No proposals have since been submitted to the Department.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the water supply at Gneeveguilla, County Kerry, has been condemned by a public analyst as being unsuitable for both human and animal consumption on the ground that it contains a very high percentage of iron, and if, in view of the fact that this constitutes a grave menace to the entire population of the village, he will take steps to ensure that a suitable water supply is made available immediately.

Mr. Murphy

No representations have been made to the Department in regard to this matter which is primarily one for action by the local authority. I shall have inquiries made and communicate with the Deputy.

Would the Minister bear in mind that both his Department and the local authority should give early consideration to the question of health services in these districts which, though they might be classed as districts of minor importance, are very important as far as the people there are concerned? I have listened to the Minister's reply regarding the Milltown scheme and there was certainly a question of cost there, but under modern conditions and with modern equipment——

The Deputy is making a fairly lengthy speech.

Mr. Flynn

These areas should have health services provided for them.

Mr. Murphy

I am aware that an important matter has been raised in the Deputy's question, but, as a person who has a good knowledge of local authorities, I think that he will agree with me that the first step in this direction must come from the local authority.
