Vol. 111 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coast Erosion.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that during the past 30 years some of the land at Ventry has been washed away, and that the village is now in serious danger of destruction from the erosion which is evident there, and if, in the circumstances, he will take such steps As are necessary to prevent further encroachment by the sea in this area.

The village of Ventry is situated in the townlands of Cloghane and Carntra, which were purchased as part of the estate of Lord Ventry by the Congested Districts Board in 1910. The holdings in these were resold to the tenants in 1918. There is no record of any embankments in this area and no complaints as to erosion have been made to the Congested Districts Board or the Land Commission, who have, as the Deputy will realise, no responsibility in such a matter.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the sea is breaking into the land through a narrow gap in the coastline at Aughnish, Kinvara, County Galway, and now threatens some 30 acres of good tillage land; that this gap could be closed at a comparatively small cost; and if, in the circumstances, he will take such steps as are necessary to prevent further encroachment by the sea in this area.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the sea has washed away the road at Fraught, Kinvara, County Galway, leading to the village of Knockaculleen, and if, in view of the fact that the people in this village cannot now bring a car or cart in or out of the village, he will direct the Land Commission to repair this road or carry out the alternative proposal submitted to them on the 15th April as soon as possible.

With your permission, a Chinn Comhairle, I propose to take together Questions Nos. 13 and 14, which relate to the same estate. The lands of Aughnish, Kinvara, and the road at Fraught, Kinvara, referred to are both on the estate of the Irish Land Commission (Wilson-Lynch), S. 3218, County Galway. The questions of the flooding of these lands and damage to the road as a result of the encroachment of the sea will be investigated by the Land Commission as early as possible.
