Vol. 111 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Cars.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether motor cars assembled in this country are sold at a higher price than similar cars sold in Great Britain, even though they are subject to a heavy purchase tax in that country; and, if so, whether he will state what justification exists for such discrepancy.

I am aware that the prices charged for many motor cars assembled in this country are higher than those charged in Great Britain for similar cars. The prices charged here have been under examination for some time and there does not appear to be sufficient justification for them even though extra costs are incurred by assemblers on imported parts, on freight and packing and on other items. The matter is being pursued with the assemblers.
